(Sir Philip’s body was transported first to Malta, and then via HMS Hecate (Cdr Bower) to Spithead. At Portsmouth Lord Haddington gave orders for HM Steam vessel Comet (Lieut Prettyman) to convey the remains to Scotland).

Description: Buried beneath the west aisle of the Church. There is also a wall monument in white marble, with an inscription between two pillars, and surmounted by a semi-circular arch containing a coat of arms.

sir philip charles henderson calderwood durham

of fordel, polton and largo.

admiral of the red, knight grand cross of the bath,

and of military merit in france.

he was born at largo on the 29th of july 1763,

entered the royal navy at fourteen, and was made

post captain in 1793. his activity, gallantry, judg

ment and zeal were excelled by none in his profess

sion, and his numerous captures and successes were

acknowledged by many public testimonials. he be-

came rear admiral in 1810, was commander-in-chief

in the west indies from 1813 till the peace of 1815,

and held the command at portsmouth from 1837 to

1839, he represented queenborough and devizes

in several parliaments, but passed his latter years

chiefly at fordel, courted in society and generous-

ly spending an ample fortune. in 1799 he married

lady charlotte matilda bruce, daughter of charles

fifth earl of elgin, who died in 1816; and secondly

in 1817, anne elizabeth, daughter and heiress of

sir john henderson of fordel baronet, whom he sur-

vived only three months. he died at naples on the

2nd of april 1845, and was interred beneath the

west aisle of this church.
